Mark McGuinness

Portrait of Mark McGuinnessWelcome to my poetry site.

That’s me on the threshold of the room where Basho wrote his first book of haiku. (If my smile looks a little fixed, it’s because there was a far-right demonstration taking place on the street outside, about ten yards in front of me.)

My poems have appeared in Magma, Oxford Poetry, The Rialto and The Wolf. You can read some of them here.

I was awarded third prize in the 2016 Stephen Spender Prize, for a passage from my translation of Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde. You can read my entry here.

I spent eight years on the editorial board of Magma and edited Magma 34. The UK Poetry Library has an archive of Magma 34, including audio recordings of many of the poets who contributed.

When I’m not writing poetry I’m coaching artists and creatives. My Lateral Action site hosts my creativity blog.

I’m the author of three books for creative professionals: Resilience: Facing Down Rejection and Criticism on the Road to Success, Motivation for Creative People, and Productivity for Creative People.

I also contributed to two international best sellers from 99U, Manage Your Day-to-Day and Maximize Your Potential.

Why I write this poetry blog

If you read poetry then you probably recognise that feeling when you read something really great — maybe not a whole poem, perhaps just a line or stanza — and there’s no one there to share it with.

This blog is my answer to that problem. I use it as a notebook to jot down thoughts about the poetry I’m reading, in the hope that someone, somewhere may find them of interest. I also paste in my own publications — poems, reviews and articles.
